Workshop “Language and Society: The Sociohistorical Nature of Linguistic Boundaries”

On the morning of October 20, at Campus B – University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH), the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) successfully organized an academic workshop for language-major students titled “Language and Society: The Sociohistorical Nature of Linguistic Boundaries”, delivered by Assoc. Prof. Elena Errico from the Department of Legal, Language, Interpreting and Translation Studies, University of Trieste (Italy).

The session provided UEH students with an insightful perspective on the relationship between language, society, and history, explaining that the boundary between a “language” and a “dialect” is not merely a linguistic issue but also reflects national identity, political power, and the cultural development process of each community.

With her open and engaging presentation style, Assoc. Prof. Errico encouraged participants to view language as a social phenomenon that constantly evolves and transforms, inspiring their interest in sociolinguistics within the context of globalization.

The workshop not only provided useful academic knowledge but also marked the beginning of international collaboration between the School of Foreign Languages – UEH and the Department of Legal, Language, Interpreting and Translation Studies of the University of Trieste (Italy), as well as between UEH and the University of Trieste in general, in the near future.
